Computing is a practical subject in which students learn not only the basics of ICT skills and concepts but also the practical aspects of using ICT and technology in the home and the community.

Students consider all the aspects of ICT and Computing including; ICT skills, control, coding and algorithms, graphics and design and most importantly E-Safety. These areas are considered in great detail across the key stages, students learn the concepts of the school network, how this operates, how the internet works and why it is important to keep sensitive and personal information safe and secure. Students are given practical skills and strategies to ensure that they never share personal information or images and know the real dangers as well of the benefits that the internet and the world wide web has. Students use exciting games and programs such as ‘code academy’ and ‘Scratch’ to engage with coding on a practical and realistic level.

All pupils that complete the guided learning hours required for the subject receive an accredited qualification, depending on their level of entry. Students achieve functional skills ICT at Entry Level 1 and Entry Level 2, other students complete PSD units in ICT related areas up to Entry Level 3. For some students, who can meet the demand they can complete a BTEC in ITQ which is currently run at Entry Level 3 and Level 1. Students can collect a number of relevant units such as; User fundamentals, using a keyboard, presentation software, multimedia software etc. These units are gathered to form a BTEC qualification as either an award or certificate, which is equivalent to a GCSE. Students who are capable have the opportunity to further their learning up to Level 2, or achieve further units towards a diploma.

Where access is an issue students can use a number of specially adapted devices such as specific mice, keyboards and touch screens. All students are encouraged to use ICT and computing to build their skills and ensure confidence in ICT for life.
